Year 1 – Goldfinch Class

Year 1 – Goldfinch Class

Welcome to Year 1 – Goldfinch Class

Term 1

Our topic this term is ‘If you go down to the woods…’ We are reading stories about ‘Percy and the Park Keeper’ and using these to learn how stories are structured with a beginning, middle and end. We are also learning about characters and story settings. As part of science we are learning about animal habitats so we are visiting our school wood to look at where we think animals may live and why. As our class names are birds we are designing and making bird feeders in the hope that we can encourage some of our feathered friends to visit us. We are writing instructions to make sandwiches and bread and enjoying eating these!

Term 2

Our topic this term is ‘To infinity and beyond…’  We will be learning about space and the planets that are in our Solar system. We will also be using books by Claire Freeman (Aliens love Underpants) to take a light hearted look at who or what may live on planets other than Earth.

Term 3

Our topic this term is ‘A bucketful of dinosaurs’. We will be learning about Dinosaurs and what is believed to have led to their extinction. We will be using a simple timeline to look at the different periods in time that dinosaurs were alive and where these dinosaurs lived and what they ate. We are going to be designing our own dinosaur and making these from clay using a variety of tools and techniques to give them texture. We are continuing to explore uses of technology focussing particularly on how to keep ourselves safe when using the internet and which information we need to keep personal. We will also be using programmable toys to help us learn about directional and positional language.
